Kingsnake (Florida)

Quick sourced reference values. LOCUS Scales' full breeding/genetics toolset is built specifically for ball pythons — this page is a courtesy reference for other species.

Scientific name
Lampropeltis getula floridana
Native range
Florida and southeastern United States
Lifespan
15-20 years
Lifestyle
🌍 Terrestrial
Warm side
29°C
Cool side
24°C
Humidity
55%

Humid southeastern-US origin — needs higher humidity than the California kingsnake, often underestimated when generic kingsnake rules are applied. Fun fact: like other kingsnakes, resistant to the venom of pit vipers native to its region (rattlesnakes, cottonmouths) thanks to natural antibodies in its blood — letting it hunt venomous snakes without harm.

Diet: Carnivore — rodents (mice), frozen-thawed. Caution: eats other snakes in the wild, never house with another snake.

Feeding frequency: Baby: every 5-7 days. Juvenile: every 7-10 days. Adult: every 10-14 days.

Substrate: Standard aspen shavings, in a fairly deep layer — this species digs actively. Never pine or cedar — toxic oils.

UVB: Same logic as the California kingsnake — likely Ferguson zone 2, moderate UVB (5-7%) reasonable.

🏠 Enclosure size

Baby : ~24×18×18in (under 6 months)
Sub-adult : ~36×18×18in (over 6 months, sub-adult)
Adult : 48×24×24in minimum — bigger recommended if space allows

Common questions

⚠️ Its bite can be startling — what to expect?
The Florida kingsnake has a reputation for being even a bit feistier and more defensive than the California kingsnake in new animals. Unlike a quick strike-and-release, it tends to bite, chew, and hang on for a few seconds to a few minutes — a constrictor reflex, not real aggression. Not dangerous (not venomous), and it generally decreases with acclimation. Stay calm — pulling worsens the grip.
How do I get it to release if it stays latched on?
Run the snake's head under cool (not ice-cold) tap water — the change in stimulus usually gets it to release within seconds. For a very large, stubborn animal, a bit of mouthwash (like Listerine) held near the snout (never directly in the mouth) also works. Never pull on the body or insert a hard object into the mouth.
Why does everyone talk about escaping with this species?
Like the corn snake and California kingsnake, able to squeeze through openings that look impossibly small. Check every seam and lid corner before even setting the animal in.
How long should I wait after feeding before handling?
24-48 hours minimum — handling too soon after a meal increases the risk of regurgitation.
How often should I handle a new kingsnake?
Let it settle in for 5-7 days without handling after arrival. After that, short, regular sessions acclimate the animal better than long, rare ones — and reduce defensive bites over time.
